A few hints for whomever does do announcing: it really helps to have a spotter at the last control with a radio, as we did at Teanaway last year. A radio at a split control is nice, but each radio in the forest needs to have a dedicated individual at the finish (the announcer can't keep up with two data streams - one from the finish and one from the split control - at the same time). A start list SORTED BY BIB NUMBER is essential (I've been to events where this didn't exist!). For the individual event, I had a large piece of paper premarked with each A class. Every time someone finished, their card was passed to me before posting - if they were the new leader, this was written on the paper and announced. Given the start list and the paper, it was possible to quickly estimate the time for an incoming runner, allowing me to announce "and here comes the new leader for ..." *AS* they were still in the run in chute. A clear view of the chute helps, as does a good sun shade, etc.
